Remembering Admiral Michiel De Ruyter

On Saturday, 16th February, Emma will sing at the remembrance ceremony for Admiral De Ruyter. The Dutch Admiral Michiel De Ruyter led several major victories against the French and the English, including the Raid on the Medway. He also released twenty-six Protestant Hungarian ministers from slavery.

Each year, the De Ruyter foundation organizes a remembrance ceremony in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. There will be readings (in Dutch) and a visit to the crypt. Together with Hungarian guitarist Robert Sinha she will perform music linked to De Ruyter’s life, including works by Huygens, Dowland, Schubert, and Ireland.

Looking Back on 2018

2018 marked the centenary of the end of the First World War in Europe. Emma sang in France during the opening ceremony of Great Vigil, an event across Pays d’Artois in which 274 remembrance sites were lit up, and at the CWGC Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. She then travelled to Belgium to sing at Tyne Cot and at the Tanks Memorial Ypres Salient.

This was a particularly special trip because Emma was joined by six pupils from her former primary school. It was lovely to introduce the next generation to remembrance ceremonies. During the visit, Emma was made honorary ambassador to the Tanks Memorial Ypres Salient.

In addition to her work for British remembrance, Emma was invited to sing for the official US Centennial World War One Ceremony in Europe, held at In Flanders Field ABMC cemetery in Waregem, Belgium. It was a beautiful event, attended by descendants as well as VIPs.

Emma was also honoured to be invited to sing for the German Volkstrauertag on 18th November on the request of British veteran John Sleep. The German embassy requested Amazing Grace and the aria Laschia ch’io Pianga from Handel’s opera Rinaldo. By beautiful coincidence, Emma sang the same aria a week earlier on 11th November at the CWGC Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, just minutes after the centenaryof the the Armistice of Compiègne.

In France, Emma sang for ceremonies commemorating the Battle of Arras at the Wellington Tunnels (very much worth a visit), the Battle of the Somme at Thiepval and the Ulster Tower, the Battle of Normandy and the D-Day landings in various locations across Normandy, and for Pipers for Peace, a bagpipe festival in Amiens in which Emma sang with over four hundred pipers. She also sang during a family ceremony for the descendants of Lt. Colonel Charles Turner van Straubenzee.

Emma was invited to join the Welsh Guards Association for their remembrance ceremony in Hechtel, Belgium, and the Welsh Guards Pilgrims for various ceremonies in Flanders.

Emma was very happy to sing in the the UK several times in 2018. As well as concerts in the north of England, she sang in Northern Ireland on 12th and 13th July, in Hay on Wye in Wales, in a charity veteran’s gala in Charing Cross Theatre in London’s West End, and on HMY Britannia in Leith, Edinburgh, for a Christmas dinner for veterans organised by D-Day Revisited.

In the Netherlands, Emma sang for the Airborne Remembrance ceremony in CWGC Oosterbeek for Operation Market Garden, and for ceremonies organised by the Royal British Legion (Holland Branch), the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, and the Stichting Nederland-Amerika. She also sang at the Dutch Veteran’s Institute in Doorn and for the Leiden veterans on Veterans’ Day.

Emma was honoured to sing at the unveiling of several monuments this year. In particular, a monument in Lion sur Mer for the crew of landing craft LCH185, which was sunk off the coast of Normandy in 1944. Survivor Patrick Thomas was present to unveil the monument and meet the family of his close friend who drowned.

Another beautiful story is that of Frank Ashleigh. Frank was a glider pilot during Operation Market Garden. He has campaigned for many years to give the glider pilots the recognition they deserved. Almost all the troops and equipment was brought in using gliders, yet most depictions of Operation Market Garden focus on parachutists. Frank Ashleigh unveiled a monument to the glider pilots in Renkum, close to where many of the gliders landed.

In addition to her work in Remembrance, Emma continues to sing concerts and oratorios. Highlights this year included singing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Requiem, and Liszt’s Via Crucis. She also sang the Sanctus from Gounod’s Messe Solenelle de Sainte Cecile with the Dutch Royal Airforce Orchestra. Concert work included solo recitals, Jansen’s “Poem Against War” with Het Fanfare Collectief and Jurgen Nab, and Tomasi’s “Procession” from Fanfares Liturgiques with Guido Marchena.

Emma was delighted to work with the band “Simple Harmonic Motion” and the male vocal ensemble “Olga.” She also recorded Roland Bouman’s setting of Vera Britten’s “Perhaps.”

It has been a wonderful and fulfilling year.

Christmas Eve in the Pieterskerk

Each year, the Protestant community in Leiden hosts two huge annual carol services in the Pieterskerk. The Pieterskerk is famous as the church of the “Pilgrim Fathers.” Pastor John Robinson, who travelled with the Pilgrims to the Netherlands, is buried there. He was too ill to sail with them to America on the Mayflower and he died in 1625.

The Pieterskerk is also known locally as the location in which the Protestant citizens of Leiden went to give thanks after the siege of Leiden ended in 1574.

The Christmas Eve services are open to all.

Monday, 24th December, 20:30 and 22:30 – Christmas Eve services at the Pieterskerk, Leiden, the Netherlands

Leidse Cantorij Advent Concert

Emma will join the Leidse Cantorij in their annual Advent Concert in the Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden. The choir was founded in 1968 and specialises in Anglican choral music. As well as their regular work in the Netherlands, singing in most major cathedrals, they have sung in England in St. Paul’s, Gloucester, York, Rochester, and Peterborough Cathedrals, and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. Their conductor is Hans Brons.

Emma has followed the choir with interest since she moved to the Netherlands since they evoke the Anglican choral sound so very well: the daily, choral Evensong is something she still misses. Recently, the Hooglandse Kerk has acquired a Father Willis Organ from 1892. Emma is delighted to be singing accompanied by this glorious instrument, in the capable hands of Willeke Smits.
